late night skate

Under a bridge somewhere in Vienna is a place that screams of teenage recklessness and sought hope for a better future. Depicted here is a tiny skatepark that has been build under a bridge. It is accessible by a walkway which is split 50:50 between bike and foot.

I love the whole scene of this panorama shot. It is, in essence, an unremarkable space, which goes unnoticed by dozens every day.

But the graffiti on the wall and the scraped concrete all tell a story, a story of life. How many tears were shed here over past love, or how many friendships where made and lost on those ramps. It reminds me of places I visited in my youth to have fun, talk about hardships or just be and get away from everything. I see a place of refuge for those who do not yet know how to navigate the complexity of adolescence.

Photographically it’s a nice composition. In the right 1/3rd the frame moves to infinity. The road helps to build context without distracting. While after 2/3rd of the image, the main eye-catcher stands and illuminates the scene. The attention is drawn to the centre of the picture. The pile of leafs, the ramps and the wall of art all tell a story of a single place.
